In September 2016, Jan Du Plessis of WERK_, a design and build collaborative in Baakens Valley, approached Strategy to come up with branding and identity for Food Truck Friday, a concept he and street food owner, Grant Foong of Foong’s had dreamed about. This event would feature only 5 food trucks and some music playing in the background – in the hope of activating the inner Baakens Valley precinct. The area has become a new hub for artisanal eateries, micro breweries, shops and offices spaces in Port Elizabeth.
Almost a year later, this community event has grown to be one of the biggest markets in the Eastern Cape; attracting over 5000 people per event. The event now features over 20 owner-operated food trucks, 20 craft stalls inside the warehouse, restaurants and bars as well as kids activities.
The event has attracted a very diverse audience and is a platform to show off the very best of Port Elizabeth’s street food culture, craft, art and music scenes.
